What is the Suffolk Association for Counselling?

The primary aim of the Suffolk Association for Counselling (SAC) is to promote counselling and good practice in Suffolk. Founded in 1990 the SAC is a voluntary organisation governed by a constitution and is managed by a Committee.

What does the Suffolk Association for Counselling do?

The SAC produces and manages an online Directory of Suffolk Counsellors distributes a printed copy of that Counselling Directory, published once each year (usually Jan/Feb), which gives information about counsellors, counselling agencies, counselling supervisors and training agencies.   It is the most comprehensive resource available for anyone seeking a counsellor or counselling supervisor in Suffolk.

The printed Directory is distributed free to many agencies, GPs, Libraries etc. in and around Suffolk and each member of the SAC receives a free copy. The Directory is also widely used by colleagues as a networking database and keeps counsellors “on the map” in Suffolk.  The online Directory is available to search engines and therefore to the public 24/7/365!

The SAC seeks to update the website regularly and contains information about CPD training events, correspondence, articles and reports from members.

Aims and Objectives of the Association

  • To facilitate the exchange of information and ideas about counselling.
  • To facilitate mutual support for members.
  • To provide a network of contacts in the counselling movement.
  • To organise events, conferences, meetings or training.
  • To promote good professional practice.
  • To raise public awareness of counselling

At the 2015 AGM, it was agreed by the membership & committee to change some of the terminology SAC uses for membership categories as follows:

1) Student Associates (formerly ‘Student Members’) – those with an interest in counselling who are currently undertaking training and have yet to qualify as counsellors/therapists. £7.50 p.a.

2) Associates (formally ‘Full Members’) – those with an interest in counselling and being part of the SAC who are not training, may or may not be qualified and do not wish to advertise in the hard-copy SAC Directory or via the SAC Web Directory. £15 p.a.

3) Practitioners (new definition) – those who are qualified to practice as counsellors / therapists (according to our directory entry criterion) and wish to have a Directory entry. Practitioners will pay one fee which includes SAC membership and one entry in the Directory (hard-copy & web versions). £35 p.a.

  • Practitioners will include Counsellors, Supervisors, Agencies and Training Providers.
  • Those who wish to have more than one Directory entry will need to pay £20 for that additional Entry.
  • Those who are Training Providers will need to pay the £35 Practitioner fee and the £50 advertising fee.
